This term the Junior Pods are trying a new learning approach based on structured play. At Avalon School we are calling it our Tōmene-Explore Time. This time happens daily from 1.45-3pm.
The children are able to select curriculum themes (in maths – music – visual art – construction – health and physical wellbeing) to participate in. The teachers set up different explore stations that the students can learn and interact in.
The main aims of this type of learning are:
- for children to have more authentic opportunities to learn social skills, problem solving, decision making and independence
- for children to have more frequent opportunities to have their learning personalised and student driven
- to reflect on their own culture as well as have exposure to new concepts and experiences
- to learn that literacy and numeracy skills are meaningful and useful parts of everyday life
If you would like to know more or come and see it in action for yourself, have a chat with your child’s Home Pod teacher 🙂
